Who Receives Zakat?

What is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — an obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on eligible wealth that exceeds the Nisab threshold and has been held for one lunar year (hawl). It is paid to specific categories of recipients including the poor, the needy, and those in debt.
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have before being obligated to pay Zakat. It is equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. At current gold prices, this is approximately USD 5,000-6,000 or AED 18,000-22,000.
What assets are included in Zakat?
Zakatable assets include: cash and bank savings, gold and silver, business inventory, trade goods, investments and shares (the zakatable portion), receivables you expect to collect. Excluded: personal use items, your home, car, clothing, household furniture.
When is Zakat paid?
Zakat is due once a lunar year (hawl) has passed on the wealth held above Nisab. Most Muslims calculate and pay Zakat during Ramadan for convenience. You can pay monthly in advance throughout the year.
